Zawaj – Designing a Better Muslim Matchmaking Experience

Finding the right life partner is an important part of life, but it isn’t always easy. Many Muslim individuals and families face challenges such as cultural expectations, fake profiles, privacy concerns and the financial pressure that can come with marriage.

Zawaj was started by a family who wanted to make a difference. Their idea was simple: create a safe, respectful and completely dowry-free platform where Muslims could connect with genuine intentions and work towards nikah.

When I joined the project as a freelance web designer and developer, my job was to take that idea and turn it into a modern, professional website that felt welcoming and trustworthy.

Trust matters most when people are making decisions that can change their lives.

Understanding What Was Needed

One of the main challenges was making the platform simple enough for anyone to use while still providing the information people need to make confident decisions.

People needed to browse profiles, understand compatibility, recognise verified members and connect without feeling overwhelmed by complicated screens or unnecessary steps.

I focused on creating a clean, comfortable experience where users could easily find what they were looking for.

Bringing the Idea to Life

I worked on the project from the initial branding and design through to the custom WordPress development.

Some of the key areas I worked on included:

  1. Branding & Logo: Created the logo and visual identity using a modern purple colour scheme that feels friendly, professional and recognisable.
  2. Website UI/UX: Designed a clean, responsive website with simple navigation, well-organised content and consistent layouts.
  3. Member Profiles: Designed profile listings and detailed profile pages to make personal information and marriage preferences easier to explore.
  4. Trust & Verification: Highlighted verified profiles, trust scores and membership details to help users feel more confident.
  5. Business Services: Created dedicated sections where users can discover wedding-related services and connect with businesses.
  6. Blog & Content: Designed an organised blog experience for sharing marriage advice, useful information and community stories.
  7. Custom WordPress Development: Built a custom WordPress theme with tailored layouts and functionality to meet the project’s needs.

Throughout the project, I wanted the website to feel personal and approachable rather than like another complicated online platform.

The Final Result

The finished website brought Zawaj’s vision together into one consistent digital experience, covering member discovery, detailed profiles, wedding services and helpful content.

During a website review, the platform showed 547 member profiles and 542 expressions of interest, reflecting visible member activity.

  1. From a business and user experience perspective, the work helped create:
  2. A more professional and recognisable brand.
  3. A smoother experience for exploring profiles and services.
  4. Clearer information to support trust and confidence.
  5. Better opportunities for visitors to discover content and engage with the platform.
  6. A flexible custom WordPress foundation for future improvements.

A good website should not just look beautiful; it should make people feel comfortable, confident and ready to take action.

Final Thoughts

What made Zawaj special for me was the purpose behind it. This wasn’t simply about designing another website or building a WordPress theme. It was about helping a family turn a meaningful idea into a real digital experience.

I’m pleased to have contributed to the branding, design and development of a platform that aims to make finding a life partner simpler, more respectful and less stressful.
