Building a Free, AI-Powered Development Workflow with Kilo Code

How I integrated Kilo Code with VS Code to build a cost-effective, AI-powered development environment using free and open-source models, eliminating paid coding subscriptions and usage limits.

Project Overview

As Head of IT at ME Digital Group, I continuously looked for ways to improve development productivity while keeping operational costs under control. AI-powered coding assistants had become an important part of everyday development, but subscription fees, token consumption and daily usage limits introduced unnecessary constraints.

I decided to rethink the way I worked with AI-assisted development.

The goal was simple: build a reliable, AI-powered development environment that could support my daily coding activities without depending on expensive subscriptions.

The Challenge

While using Cursor, I experienced the limitations that often come with subscription-based AI development tools:

  1. Recurring subscription costs for AI-assisted development.
  2. Token consumption and daily usage restrictions.
  3. Interrupted workflows when usage limits were reached.
  4. Dependence on paid services for everyday development assistance.

I wanted more control over my development environment, AI model selection and overall usage costs without compromising the convenience of an AI coding assistant.

The Solution

I independently integrated the Kilo Code coding agent into my existing Visual Studio Code environment, creating a flexible development workflow powered by free and open-source AI models.

Rather than relying on a single paid AI provider, the setup allowed me to explore and work with different available models based on development requirements.

The implementation focused on:

  1. VS Code Integration: Configured Kilo Code directly within my existing development IDE.
  2. AI Model Flexibility: Enabled access to available free and open-source models.
  3. Cost Optimisation: Reduced dependency on paid AI coding subscriptions.
  4. Workflow Continuity: Avoided the subscription-based daily usage restrictions associated with my previous setup.
  5. Developer Productivity: Brought AI-assisted coding capabilities directly into my everyday development environment.

Implementation & Experience

I handled the integration independently, from evaluating the alternative development approach to configuring the coding agent within VS Code.

The emphasis was not simply on replacing one coding tool with another. It was about creating a more flexible and sustainable way to incorporate AI into everyday development.

The new setup gave me greater freedom to experiment with different models, manage resource usage and continue development without constantly monitoring subscription limits.

AI should make development more accessible, not make productivity dependent on how many tokens you can afford.

Sometimes the best technology upgrade is not buying another subscription, but building a smarter way to work with what is already available.

Business Impact & Outcomes

  1. The integration delivered practical improvements to my daily development routine:
  2. Eliminated the need for my paid Cursor subscription.
  3. Reduced recurring costs associated with AI coding assistance.
  4. Established a flexible environment for experimenting with free AI models.
  5. Removed dependency on Cursor’s daily usage limits.
  6. Improved control over my AI-assisted development workflow.

While no formal productivity percentage was measured, the biggest outcome was having a development environment that better suited my working style, budget and day-to-day requirements.

My Role

Worked independently and completed the evaluation, configuration and integration of Kilo Code into Visual Studio Code. Led the technical implementation and established the new AI-assisted development workflow.
